Schweikert and Ciscomani Break Promises, Vote to Cut Health Care to Give Tax Breaks to Wealthy
TUCSON — Congressmen David Schweikert and Juan Ciscomani today broke their promise to Arizonans by voting for the GOP Tax Scam that could cut health care for over 365,000 Arizonans, give a massive tax break to the wealthy, and add trillions to the nation’s debt.
Congressman Ciscomani told Senators last month that he could not support their steep Medicaid cuts, now totalling more than $1 trillion. This came after he already voted for massive cuts to Medicaid that would take away health care from over 16,000 of his constituents. Once again, Ciscomani broke his promise, and he voted for it anyway. Congressman Schweikert said he couldn't support the bill because it adds trillions of dollars to the national debt, but he broke his promise and voted for it anyway.
In addition to cutting Medicaid, the GOP Tax Scam will:
kick millions of people enrolled in private insurance plans through the ACA Marketplace, like Phoenix small business owner Meredith Blake, off their plans
cut SNAP and risk access to free-and-reduced-lunch programs that low-income families and children like students in the Laveen District rely on to afford food
threaten Critical Access Hospitals, like Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center in Globe, and other facilities that rural Arizonans rely on to access health care
end clean energy tax credits that would force massive layoffs for local businesses like Net Zero Solar in Tucson
“I feel betrayed by Congressman Ciscomani who said he couldn’t vote for this bill because it would hurt Arizonans just like me, and then he did it anyway,” said Garrett Newell, a Tucson resident who relies on Medicaid for his health care. “He and Congressman Schweikert have turned their backs on the people they were elected to represent to give more tax breaks to the wealthiest of the wealthy. How can we trust them to look out for us?”
