Schweikert Sheds ‘Deficit Hawk’ Reputation to Vote for Republican Tax Law

PHOENIX — Congressman David Schweikert has long credited himself as a 'deficit hawk,' but his recent vote for the Republican Tax Law – that strips health care from 15 million Americans while blowing up the deficit by giving trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the superwealthy – calls that claim into question.

A recent study found that the GOP Tax Law’s deficit-funded tax cuts will drive up costs for millions of Americans by raising the cost to apply for a home mortgage or a small business loan.

According to the NBC News

"Schweikert rode the 2010 Tea Party wave to Washington and was one of the founding members of the Freedom Caucus, but left the group in 2023. The wonky chairman of the bicameral Joint Economic Committee, Schweikert has given countless floor speeches and interviews on the risk of deficits and the national debt, accompanied by floor charts and graphs.

In an interview, Schweikert said the CBO score showing the Trump law will add trillions to the deficit 'absolutely gives me heartburn.'"

"By voting for the Republican Tax Law, not only did Congressman Schweikert undermine his years of 'fiscal hawk' talking points, he abandoned 420,000 Arizonans who will lose their health care," Honest Arizona Executive Director Andrea Moreno said. "As Congress faces a looming Republican shutdown, Congressman Schweikert should work to restore the Medicaid and health care tax credit cuts and repeal the billionaire tax cuts he made permanent."

Honest Arizona previously called out Schweikert in the Scottsdale Progress for voting for the Republican Tax Law and encouraged his constituents to contact his office to urge him to vote to protect health care tax credits.
