NEW: Schweikert & Ciscomani's Votes for GOP Tax Law and Tariffs Making Americans Poorer
TUCSON — A new report finds that tariffs and the Republican Tax Law – which Congressmen David Schweikert and Juan Ciscomani voted for – are costing Arizonans money while giving a tax break to the wealthy.
The report, published by the Center for American Progress, details how the Republican Tax Law and tariffs raise costs by thousands of dollars per household, thereby lowering the average incomes for all but the top 1 percent. The law also eliminates health care coverage for hundreds of thousands of Arizonans and makes it harder for them to afford food.
According to the Center for American Progress:
"The combination of new tariffs announced by the Trump administration in 2025 and new policies implemented in the [Republican Tax Law] will cause Americans’ incomes after taxes and transfers to decrease across the board in 2027, relative to 2025. Indeed, only the top 1 percent of U.S. households by earnings will see an increase. Despite some lawmakers’ attempts to rebrand the bill as a ‘working families tax cut,’ middle-income households will experience a net income decrease of 1.2 percent, or $1,300, in 2027. Meanwhile, the top 1 percent will receive a net income increase of nearly $5,000."
“Arizonans are demanding lower costs, but Congressmen Ciscomani and David Schweikert are using their power in Congress to guarantee that costs go up instead of down,” said Andrea Moreno, executive director of Honest Arizona. “With a government shutdown looming on October 1, Ciscomani and Schweikert need to restore the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP so that low-income Arizonans aren't left behind.”
