Protect Our Checks: Honest Arizona, Arizona Seniors Push Back on Republican Attacks on Social Security

TUCSON — Honest Arizona, Arizona seniors, and other beneficiaries hosted ‘Protect Our Checks’ rallies in Phoenix and Tucson as part of a national day of action to push back on the years-long efforts by congressional Republicans – including Congressmen Juan Ciscomani and David Schweikert – to weaken Social Security. Events in Phoenix and Tucson coincided with more than 50 other events across 16 states.

Social Security was enacted 90 years ago this week, on August 14, 1935. Currently, more than 1.5 million Arizonans rely on Social Security, but those benefits are at risk because the Republican Tax Law that Schweikert and Ciscomani voted for threatens the solvency of the program.

“For 90 years, millions of Arizonans like me have paid into Social Security and relied on it to make ends meet because we knew our leaders would protect our checks,” said Arizona Alliance of Retired Americans president Linda Somo. “Congressmen Schweikert and Ciscomani need to stop siding with billionaires and start supporting our access to Social Security.”

Earlier this week, Arizona seniors held ‘silver sit-ins' outside of the offices of Congressmen Ciscomani and Schweikert, “asking them to ensure the program continues and advocate for policy changes to keep it fully funded.
