ICYMI: Unions and Local Leaders Call on Congress to Protect Workers and Fund the Government

TUCSON — On Monday, Honest Arizona joined local unions, advocates and leaders to raise awareness of what is at risk during the government shutdown, highlighting how critical services are already strained and now growing. The event was also joined by Congresswoman- elect, Adelita Grijalva and Pima County Supervisor Andres Cano.

Congresswoman Elect Adelita Grijalva said, “I want to thank all our federal employees for being here today — not because it’s easy, but because it’s right. You are showing up for your families, your coworkers, and yes, this nation —even as Washington has failed to show up for you. This government shutdown is not an accident. It’s a choice. One made by Republicans who would rather score political points than do their jobs.”

“These are not statistics, these are families right here in Tucson. Veterans. Neighbors. Public servants who keep this country running.” said Omar Algeciras, Vice President of the local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees.

Federal employees and active military are expected to miss their first check on the 15th, if a resolution is not met. Earlier this week, it was reported that the White House circulated a memo stating furloughed workers might not receive back pay.

There are 34,460 federal workers in Arizona that are going without pay. 17,054 in Tucson’s Congressional District 6, which is represented by Congressman Juan Ciscomani.
