Cafecito y Chisme: Sen. Ruben Gallego Joined Mi Familia en Acción and Honest AZ for a Roundtable to Elevate the Voices of Latinos Impacted by the Republican Government Shutdown and Health Care Cuts
Scottsdale, Arizona- Mi Familia en Acción and Honest Arizona hosted a ‘Cafecito y Chisme’ roundtable with U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego this morning to hear from Small business owners, health care representatives, nonprofit leaders, and local elected officials who are growing increasingly concerned about the impending health care crisis. The Latino community is among the most affected by the severe cuts Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill makes to health care programs and the GOP congressional majority’s refusal to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits. Senator Gallego listened and urged the Latino small business owners and community leaders gathered to continue to speak out and tell the stories of how they and their families are being affected, and reminded participants that these devastating cuts were made to fund tax cuts for billionaires.
U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego affirmed, “The Republicans are in charge. They have a house, the Senate and the White House. They can entirely fix what's happening right now, but they have this goal. They've had it forever. They want to kill the ACA, and they don't know any other way to do it, except for this way, and they're gonna make everyone else suffer, and I'm certainly not gonna allow them to destroy the insurance premiums of millions of Americans without making sure the people know who did it and why they did it.”
Monica Sandschafer, Arizona State Director of Mi Familia en Acción stated, “Republicans - including Representative Schweikert - have already voted for massive cuts to health care, food assistance, and energy tax credits, and the costs of nearly everything– especially groceries– have increased under the weight of Trump’s tariffs. The Republican majority’s policies in the federal government – designed to cut taxes for billionaires – are making it harder for families to afford health care, food, and utilities and have put a massive strain on charities and community services like food banks to keep up with the increased need for help. This has left both families and charities stretched thin, even before demand increases during a shutdown. Latinos make up 23% of SNAP recipients and 30% of Medicaid enrollees and will be disproportionately impacted by any government funding cuts, so Mi Familia en Acción is going to continue to elevate their voices and stand up for their rights.”
"Real people are in jeopardy of losing their healthcare, and solely because Republicans would rather give handouts to billionaires and wealthy corporations. Not only are Arizonans already struggling with high costs of everyday items but now they are going to see their healthcare costs increase. People shouldn't have to worry about whether they can feed their family or if they can afford healthcare. Now more than ever we need to hold our elected officials accountable for not looking out for their own constituents. Our Congressman Schweikert has done nothing to lower costs, instead he continues to fall in line with his fellow Republicans," added Andrea Moreno, Executive Director of Honest Arizona.
